Can I Pop My Pimples?

Popping, squeezing or picking pimples is generally not recommended, particularly by doctors and dermatologists. There are a number of reasons for this. One being that it can cause more scarring than if it were to just heal naturally. The other reason is that it is possible to further damage the infected follicle and squeeze the bacteria deep into the skin, which can make it a longer, more painful process.

Many would argue, however, that leaving a big pus-filled pimple on your face is not only ugly and gross, but will take just as long to heal. In such cases, popping pimples might be a reasonable solution provided it is done properly. For instructions on how to pop pimples, see our pimple popping guide.
